SFMOMA Names Janet Bishop Chief Curator –

Janet Bishop.

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art made three appointments: Janet Bishop will be the museum’s new chief curator, Chad Coerver will be chief education and community engagement officer, and Rebecca Malkin-Chocron will be director of finance.

Bishop’s new role marks the first time SFMOMA has had a chief curator in three decades—according to a press representative for the institution, the position has been vacant since 1990. She has served as curator of painting and sculpture at SFMOMA since 2000; her new title is chief curator and curator of painting and sculpture.

Coerver has worked at SFMOMA in its publications, graphic design, and web department since 1999, first as managing editor and then as the department’s director. Malkin-Chocron comes to the museum after working as the CFO of Levi Strauss Mexico.

Neal Benezra, the museum’s director, said in a statement, “We are so fortunate to have Janet and Chad, two leaders with rich experience, strong relationships with the art community, expansive institutional knowledge and years of producing critically-acclaimed projects, ready to inspire and lead our teams to advance the goals of our new strategic plan.”
