The Museum of Arts and Design in New York has named Andrew Blauvelt curator at large for design and John Underkoffler curator at large for design technology. In their new roles, Blauvelt and Underkoffler will organize design-focused exhibitions at the museum.

Blauvelt currently serves as director of the Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and he will maintain that title as he undertakes his new position at the Museum of Arts and Design. Before joining Cranbrook in 2015, he worked at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis for 17 years. There, he held various curatorial and administrative roles, including design director, chief of communications and audience engagement, and senior curator of design, research, and publishing.

Underkoffler is the founder and CEO of the software company Oblong Industries. He has been a science adviser to films like Minority Report (2002), Hulk (2003), and Iron Man (2008), and, in 2015, he received the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum’s National Design Award for Interaction Design.

Chris Scoates, the director of the Museum of Arts and Design, said in a statement, “I am excited to welcome Andrew and John to the MAD team at a crucial moment in charting the Museum’s future. Their innovative ideas, energy, and enthusiasm for MAD’s mission will inject our curatorial program with a strong focus on design and technology, and will play a pivotal role in helping MAD attract and engage contemporary audiences.”
