Jake Gyllenhaal: Art Critic! –

Gyllenhaal in Velvet Buzzsaw NETFLIX

The trailer for the long-awaited art world film starring Jake Gyllenhaal has arrived. Titled Velvet Buzzsaw, it is written and directed by Dan Gilroy, whom Gyllenhaal worked with previously on the film Nightcrawler. Gyllenhaal plays an art critic.

Judging by the trailer, which premiered today with Vanity Fair, the film is a thriller that has both supernatural and satirical elements and one plot point—hungry young artist claims work by unheralded outsider as their own—that bears a minor resemblance to Daniel Clowes and Terry Zwigoff’s 2006 film Art School Confidential. Coincidentally, both films include John Malkovich.

Also among Velvet Buzzsaw’s ensemble is Rene Russo, who plays a punk musician-turned-gallerist, and Toni Collette, who takes on the role of a curator-turned-art adviser. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Gilroy, who refers to himself as “a contemporary-art aficionado who doesn’t collect,” explained that he came up with the idea for the film during a trip to Dia:Beacon in Upstate New York. One possible thread running throughout the movie is what the director referred to as “the over-monetization of art.”

With that in mind, Gilroy said he hopes viewers come out of the film looking at art in a bit of a different light. “Any time you listen to a piece of music or look at a sculpture or a painting or a film, you realize the artists behind that have invested what I believe to be their creative soul into the work,” Gilroy told Vanity Fair. “To me, that’s a bit of a sacred thing and I think we’ve lost that a little bit. I would love it if we could return to that.”
