High Line Names Diya Vij Associate Curator of Public Programs –

Diya Vij.

Diya Vij will be the new associate curator of public programs at the High Line in New York. She will start in the post on January 14.

Vij was the special projects manager for the Commissioner’s Unit in the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA). In that role, she created the department’s Public Artists in Residence program, which brings artists into the city’s civic sector as a way of applying their artistic practices to some of today’s most pressing concerns in New York. Participating artists have included Tania Bruguera, Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, Onyedika Chuke, and Ebony Noelle Golden. With No Longer Empty and Art Space Sanctuary, Vij co-organized the “What Can We Do? Immigration Summit for Cultural Organizations” in October 2018. She was previously a curatorial fellow at the Queens Museum.

In an email, High Line vice president for public engagement Solana Chehtman told ARTnews, “[Diya Vij] brings an unmatched understanding of the city’s cultural landscape, as well as experience working with artists in experimental and collaborative ways, and centering issues of diversity, inclusion, and equity in the DCLA’s policy work, which resonate very well with the work we’ve been developing at the High Line.”

In her new role, Vij will look to continue and expand the public-engagement work the High Line has already been doing; she will focus on working with New York–based artists to create new projects. Recent collaborators include Kenya (Robinson), Jordan Eagles, Shaun Leonardo, the Illustrious Blacks, Alicia Grullón, and Sol Aramendi.
