The 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair will feature 24 exhibiting galleries in its fifth edition in New York. This year’s fair, running May 3-5 during Frieze week with a VIP opening on May 2, marks 1-54’s first move to a new location in Manhattan—Industria, a photo studio in the West Village—after years at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn.

The 2019 fair will include galleries from 16 countries, including Ethiopia, Morocco, France, Senegal, the UK and the U.S. “Our fifth anniversary in New York comes at a moment of tremendous change and excitement for the fair,” Touria El Glaoui, 1-54’s founding director, told ARTnews. “This year, visitors will encounter more than 65 contemporary artists from Africa and the diaspora including six solo artist presentations and more artists than ever before from the United States and the Caribbean.”

Eleven of the galleries this year are new to 1-54’s roster, with returning presentations by galleries including MAGNIN-A from Paris; Galerie Cécile Fakhoury from Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire and Dakar, Senegal; and AFRONOVA from Johannesburg, South Africa. Of the returning cohort, El Glaoui said, “Their longstanding support has been invaluable as the New York fair has grown and matured.”

1-54 also presents fairs in London (where it was founded) and Marrekech, Morocco, to which it will return February 21-24 after an auspicious debut last year.
